Town Earns over $240,000 for LED Street Lighting Retrofits

October 1, 2015 – The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake recently completed a large-scale LED street lighting project where 1,034 lights were converted to modern LED lighting. Niagara-on-the-Lake Hydro’s Retrofit Program helped defray the cost of the project by providing $240,201.84 in incentives, representing over 42% of the cost of the project.

“Moving to LED street lights made sense from both a conservation and cost savings standpoint,” said Lord Mayor Pat Darte. “Being able to take advantage of NOTL Hydro’s rebate program was definitely a bonus on this project, netting taxpayers an additional $240,000.”

The upgrades to the lighting will provide financial savings and improved lighting quality to Town residents. While using approximately 60% less energy than the existing lighting, the new LED lights also come with 10-year warranties. Since the old fixtures had to be updated every 4-5 years, the move to LED lights brings significant maintenance savings, as well as improved lighting quality. The previous lighting had a strong yellow light, however, the new lighting is a more natural white light that allows you to see colours better. LEDs also focus light in specific directions, resulting in less light lost to the surroundings and increased visibility of the night sky.
